Mural Decorations:
Traditional Artisans’ Techniques and Methods

Dates: July 19 to July 30, 2010
Instructor: Alessandra Ragionieri
Location: Via San NiccolÒ 88/r, Florence

In this intensive two-week workshop, Alessandra Ragionieri will begin by taking students through the basic principles and initial exercises in order to fully understand the procedures and develop manual skills: how to draw straight lines, how to use measuring sticks, how to start from basic moldings and progress to more intricate and complex decorations and friezes.

The students will learn the techniques of cartoon transferal, stencil making, techniques of reproducing wood, marble, and textile faux finishes, and procedures for executing intricate decorative panels and, finally, creating an individual project.

In addition to using walls and wooden supports, techniques on using canvas supports and how to affix them to walls will be treated.

The course's objective is to introduce techniques and develop basic manual skills. The lessons will be supported by visits to splendidly decorated palazzi around the city, used as sources to form ideas—some with more domestic tones, and otherss with more monumental tones such as the Salone di Luca Giordano in Palazzo Medici-Riccardi.

Since 1990 Alessandra Ragionieri has been, and continues to be, actively engaged in mural painting decorations, frescoes, and mural painting restoration for both public and private patrons. Her works can be seen at in Florence at Hotel Loggiato dei Serviti, La Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato, Studio Mediterranea, Hotel Excelsior and Palazzo Ferragamo.

Early reservations are recommended, as student numbers are purposely limited to allow for a high degree of individual attention.

The cost of some of the materials are included in the fee. Other materials, however, are to be supplied by the student. A materials list will be provided upon registration.
